SUMMARY STATEMENT:

On May 1st, 2021, the Valdez Police Department began deploying Body-Worn Cameras (BWC’s) to on-duty Police Officers.  As of May 7th, all Valdez Police Officers have been equipped with a BWC.

The Valdez Police Department appreciates Council’s foresight and commitment to making the deployment of the BWC’s possible by approving the necessary funds during the 2020 budget workshops.

Attached is a brief narrative that provides some background information, details the objectives of the BWC program, identifies the equipment purchased, and addresses the training that Officers went through prior to being issued a BWC.  The last page of the document itemizes the overall financial cost thus far.

The second attachment is Chapter 220 of the Valdez Police Department OPM, titled Body Worn Cameras.

This policy, and any changes made to it, will also be published on the Police Department page of the City of Valdez website.
