RECOMMENDATION:

Appoint one candidate to the Valdez City Council to serve a term of office expiring May 4, 2022

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Due to the election of Mayor Sharon Scheidt to serve a full term as mayor, a one-year council seat vacancy now exists.

Section 2.14 (a) of the Valdez Charter directs that if a vacancy occurs in an elective office, except in the case of recall, the council shall fill the vacancy by appointment within thirty days thereafter. Each such appointment shall be for a term ending at the next regular council meeting following the next regular city election.

Historically, the City Council has appointed the candidate from the most recent election who received the next highest number of votes on the ballot than the person elected to office.

Following discussion in executive session, the City Council will return to open session and appoint a candidate to fill the council seat vacancy. The candidate will serve a term expiring after the next regular municipal election in May 2022.
