SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Commissioner Pete Carter will address the Recreation Commission and request the first two sections of Shoup Bay Trail to be renamed.

1)                     The first mile of the trail, from the Valdez West Egan Avenue trailhead out to Gold Beach, to be renamed the Gold Beach Trail.

a.                     This section of trail is on City of Valdez property and will need to go through the formal renaming process including final approval by City Council.

b.                     Attachment #1 Shoup Trail Ownership

2)                     The following three-mile section, from Gold Beach to Gold Creek, to be renamed the Gold Creek Trail.

The clarification of the trail names benefits both the demonstrated need for better user understanding of the trails, particularly first time users, as well as for getting funding to maintain the appropriate sections of the trails.

The State Department of Natural Resources, State Parks Division Kenai office that oversees Valdez state parks, asks the proposed clarification of the trail sections have public support evidenced by the support of the City of Valdez Recreation Commission.

If the Recreation Commission supports this request, a letter will be drafted to DNR and signed by Recreation Commission Chair, Mrs. Amy Gould.
