Approve Resolution #20-13
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
On January 15, 2019, the City Council and the Valdez Museum & Historical Archive (VMHA) entered into a memorandum of understanding to work jointly to plan for and build a new facility.
In order for the VMHA to solicit grants, funding sources and donors they need to have a formally designated facility site, conceptual design, and commitment from the City. The attached resolution solidifies the first of these needed items and allows the remaining two to be developed further.
Following a thorough site selection process spanning nearly two years, the most advantageous location for the development of a new museum facility is the current location on Egan Drive.
The site selection process focused on community input and support. The process consisted of numerous surveys, open houses, and City Council work sessions. Additional assistance and consultation was provided by City of Valdez Capital Facilities, the VMHA Board of Directors, the VMHA Board’s Building Subcommittee, Arcadis USA, Tom Livingston of Livingston Slone Architects, and ECI/HYER Architects.
The attached resolution is the result of Council direction to city administration to bring forth an action item for consideration based on the facility site discussion at their January 16, 2020 work session.
