RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Contract with Orion Construction, Inc. for the Valdez Swimming Pool Renovation in the Amount of $3,115,000.00.
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Valdez Swimming Pool Renovation project was out to bid for thirty one days and five (5) bids were submitted. Orion Construction, Inc., of Wasilla submitted the low bid of $3,115,000. The project consists of the base bid ($1,914,000) which encompasses the work inside the natatorium. Base bid renovations include replacement of the existing plaster and tile finish, depth markers, concrete gutters and main drain grate covers in both the lap pool and wading pool. Refinishing of the existing swimming pool area concrete deck with new slip resistant finish. Installation of metal grid ceiling and acoustical panels in the natatorium. Replacement of all light fixtures in Natatorium. Installation of new metal security gate at existing stairs and new mechanical plumbing from pool mechanical room to new pool gutters.
Additional work on the project includes two additive alternates. Additive alternate #1 ($915,000) entails all the work to remodel the existing shower and restrooms, office and waiting area. It includes: Replacement of light fixtures, mechanical equipment, and plumbing fixtures with new fixtures in the locker rooms, family change room, and reception & waiting areas. Reconfiguration of the locker room showers with new floor, wall and ceiling finishes. Replacement of Locker room and change room lockers and benches with new lockers and benches. Replacement of Reception counter with new reception counter, and new floor, wall, and ceiling finishes. Replacement of exterior doors as scheduled, with new insulated hollow metal doors and new door hardware. Installation of new wire mesh door assemblies along Grid ‘A’ at the locker room entrances, and at the stairwell to the mezzanine.
Work in additive alternate #2 ($286,000) is the installation of a new swimming pool slide, new slide landing pad, new slide pump, and all other mechanical and electrical work associated with the slide installation the installation. The slide was supposed to have been installed 18 years ago during the original expansion and renovation project back in 2000-2001 but was cut due to budgetary issues. The concrete mechanical sump, stair platform and piping were installed at that time so a slide could be installed at a later date. This project will utilize those components from the previous project.
Construction is scheduled to begin on March 11th and to be substantially complete by July 31, 2019.
Orion Construction is currently working on the Wasilla Pool and come to this project with very favorable recommendations.
