SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Background:

The commission has extensively discussed Egan Drive maintenance needs, with specific emphasis on the decorative lights which are challenging to maintain and have been malfunctioning in recent winters. At the March 2026 meeting discussion of this topic centered on how best to approach making a recommendation to Council for funding needed repairs or improvements in an orderly way.

Building Maintenance Supervisor Stan Porrit was invited to the next meeting to share thoughts and challenges on the lights. Porrit provided context surrounding the current maintenance challenges with the rope lights and options that had been explored for replacing color changing LED lights in the lamppost themselves.

This replacement would be easier for maintenance staff to manage and would provide a needed aesthetic  update to the lighting on Egan Drive. Replacement of snowflakes on the light poles was also touch upon in discussions.

Recommendation:

The Beautification Commission recommends that replacement of rope light with color changing LEDs (in the lights themselves) be further explored and this small project with high potential impact be prioritized for 2027. The commission asks that City Council direct the City Manager to collaborate with the Capital Facilities Director, Building Maintenance staff and the Beautification Commission to embed this project in the 2027 city budget.
