SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Valdez Animal Shelter has seen an increase in dog intakes leading to the use of the kennels meant for short term impounds being used to house adoptable dogs. Receiving the grant would allow for a retrofit of the impound kennels so they can be used for two different purposes.
Currently, housing a dog as a bite quarantine, leads to the adoption side of the kennel being closed to the public.
Once retrofitted, the impound kennels could house adoptable animals and meet the Association of Shelter Veterinarians recommendation in the Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.
This grant is through the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Northern Tier Initiative, this same organization paid for shelter staff to go through the Fellowship in Wisconsin where this need was highlighted.
There is not yet a firm estimate for the cost of the doors and installation. The grant award will provide up to $25,000 for the project. Based on actual cost, the amount requested may be less.
