RECOMMENDATION:
Approve of memorandum of agreement with Chugachmiut, Inc. for childcare facility design collaboration.
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The attached memorandum of agreement represents the terms and conditions discussed with Chugachmiut to assist the City with the completion of the design for the childcare center to be housed at the School District office building.
The Chugachmuit Board approved the draft agreement at their April board meeting.
Background: In May 2024 Chugachmiut notified the City of their intent to use grant funding for the Valdez area and worked with staff to identify needs and opportunities in the area. They presented to Council at the February 4, 2025 Council meeting and offered to assist the City with the design of a facility and expressed their desire to occupy the space once completed. Chugachmiut anticipates beginning operations in town later this year. Their assistance in the design is intended to ensure the facility will meet licensing requirements as well as their needs. It is intended that a lease agreement with Chugachmiut will be presented to Council for approval to operate the facility once the renovation is complete.
